The scale of rooms reflects the house's heritage, and the couple
enlisted the help of a neighbour with a flair for design and hired
crafts-men who had worked on Windsor Castle and the British Museum to
ensure an authentic finish.
'We were very lucky because all the craftsmen enjoyed working in a
building like this - they were perfectionists,' says David, 66, who ran
his own car rental business.
'They spent weeks repairing cornicing in the drawing room, for example.'
To add light to the dining hall and drawing room, they replaced a door
with an arch that also reflects the curved theme in many parts of the
apartment - most doors have semi-circular fanlights and the lower ground
floor ceilings are barrel-vaulted.
